A Bet That Went South

from The Feral Rugby Team Must GO! by Walter Ehresman

/

about

--a story song inspired by a terrible call in a football game in Cleveland, which lead to a riot from the "Dog Pound" endzone seats. The nicknames of two of my old college friends are used, entirely without their permission. The song has a late night New Orleans feel (and also illustrates the dangers of me being the kit drummer......).

A Bet That Went South
(© 2002 Walter Ehresman)

Well, up in Chicago, on the stink side of town, a little action is quite easily found;
And Joey the Wad, who was a no-blink sinner, takes the business in that section of town;
Now a young buck named T-Texas Too Smooth Tommy was a boy with a gamblin’ jones;
And you all know that he shoulda’ known better than to act that way so far from his home;
But Tommy trucked in with a grin under his brim and he told The Wad to lay the bet down;
And Joey just smiled, and we knew all the while that there would be some force applied to Tom’s bones.

Now Too Smooth Tom hadn’t been in town long, with a greeness that was easily shown;
And a story was told about the rolling of bones and some trouble down in ol’ San Antone;
But some other guys said that T-Texas, he fled, when a girl that he was whisperin’ to
was a little too young for that kind of fun, and had a brother with a quick .32;
Young Tom, he jumped down when that leverin’ sound was the loudest thing that he’d ever known;
And he smashed up the lamp while reachin’ for his pants, and the bullet nearly messed up Tom’s ‘do.

Tom’s luck flew away when the ref blew the play, with a riot comin’ from The Dog Pound;
And Joey the Wad send a couple of clods to drag T-Texas Too Smooth Tommy downtown;
“It can’t end this way!”, young Tom he cried with dismay, “on a game that was so obviously wrong!”;
But Joey just smiled, and said he liked the ref’s style, and that “This business shouldn’t take us too long.”
And one of Joey’s galoots, as he took off Tom’s boots, said “Man, you really should have first asked around:
‘Cause everybody down here knows that Joey’s sincere ‘bout makin’ sure those refs they sing the right song.”
