The Poison Pill

from Le Cafard by Walter Ehresman

/

about

--to defray travel expenses in the drive from Austin to Burning Man in 2000, I made a terrible, terrible error and took a passenger with me that turned out to be the most awful, divisive nightmare you can imagine. A friend of mine had strongly warned me against taking this person, but I didn't listen. I felt doubly terrible that my campmates in The Solo Collective, who I didn't really know well at the time (they had invited me to join based on things I'd written on-line in the Burning Man discussion group), had to deal with this person's poison for a week. Lied about having any money, came completely unprepared (despite me having spent hours, in the months leading up to the trip, helping the person make lists of what was needed). Expected people to set up her tent and generally cater to her whims. On and on. Ugggh.
