about

In 2000, I saw a Peter Gabriel fan site online that was trying to put together an electronica tribute album of Gabriel songs. I had never recorded anything in that style before, but I'm a big Gabriel fan and so I thought I'd give it a shot, using some new equipment I'd just gotten (but certainly didn't really know how to use yet). This included a (cheap) theremin I had just ordered from an ad in the back of Rolling Stone magazine. I only had two days to do the whole thing and pop the recording in the mail to New York City, in order to make the deadline. Frantic stuff, but sometimes that can really focus the mind :-)

This was uncharted waters for me at the time, for sure and, looking back, it was definitely a sign of things to come for my studio work in subsequent years. For the first guitar solo, I tried to capture something of the style of Robert Fripp (who played on early Gabriel solo albums), and for the second solo I tried to get the flavor of David Rhodes (who became Gabriel's main guitar player around the time of the third solo album).

The tribute album, to my knowledge, never came out, but I'm glad I did the song anyway. I like how it came out, and it was a good learning experience for me (however, I'm still not sure, now, how I did some of those things.....).

One of my absolute favorite Peter Gabriel songs. Here's the original, off his first solo album:
