about

A fitting end to the run of regular tracks on the album, "Last Words" is a stately piano ballad that ruminates on mortality and how we live versus how we want to be remembered.

Ehresman explains: "I thought I had finished all the songs for the new album, and in fact had even sent the audio off to Austin for mastering.......But then a few days later I was fooling around on the piano, and this music came........The lyrics were inspired by a conversation I had some days earlier with a couple of local musician friends over lunch, where we commented that if you knew in advance exactly when you were going to croak, you could give a great, appropriate title to your last album (mine would be 'The Last of It')......This got me thinking about how everyone wants to have profound last words (something worthy of the headstone), but......wouldn't it be better to think of that sentiment and then try to live that way all the time (ie. before croaking)?"

Last Words
(© 2019 Walter Ehresman)

Last words—hard to plan; don’t know rate of sand;
Not consulted when we go.
Leaving something to carve on the stone--
steering how we’ll be known.

Might be better living that way—
reflected in anything we might say;
Writing our epitaphs each day;
Actions before we’ve gone away.

Easier said than done; I’m not a special one—
roll the rock right up that hill;
Lifetime venture again every day—
another chance to mold the clay.

Legacy is not the driver, ‘cause when you’re gone, you’re gone;
Ego is the snare that holds us—poisons our life song.
