[A MESSAGE FROM WALTER]

ORIGINALLY APPEARED ON THE 2010 DELPHI RISING ALBUM "FOR GRANTED."

For a couple of years around 2009, I was in an Austin band called Delphi Rising. I took that opportunity to write some songs that I thought would be more effective being performed and recorded by a full band, as opposed to the "one-man band" approach that I use on all my solo albums. And this song certainly fell into that category. It was written as a tongue-in-cheek tribute to all those hard rock shows I used to see in San Antonio in the late '70s when I was in high school. And so the band recorded it in that style, and Vic Ramirez took the lead vocals.

Years later, when doing acoustic solo shows, I thought it would be fun to perform this song but knew that I would have to really change the feel of it to play/sing it alone on an acoustic guitar. And so I came up with this lounge arrangement that is, if anything, even MORE tongue-in-cheek than the original version of the song. And so, as the last recording I did for this new album, I thought it would be fun to try to capture that silly lounge approach to what was originally a silly hard rock song. And so you've got "Nocturnal," to close out my new album. Hope you like it.

lyrics

Nocturnal
(© 2008 Walter Ehresman)

Bone-creeper, alligator with a special eyeball right on you;
Root-slipper, stone tripper, and there really ain’t that much you can do.
Night’s falling, and you’re stalling, but you know you got to step ‘cross that line;
Knees shaking, but you’re making some decisions that could change that in time.

[chorus]
Nocturnal–a creature of the night;
They call me nocturnal–you cannot use those things you bring from the light.

All the places that you roam in the day ain’t the same when Amun drops from the sky,
and all the pathways that your feet like to walk will not lead you to the same lullaby.
Heresy, but I think you’ll agree, when your vision starts to warmly grow,
that bat time leaves you feeling so fine, and you’ll come to fear that Eastern glow.
