Now I Take My Leave

from Global Search Party by Walter Ehresman

/

about

This one is poignant singer-songwriter material, with some idiosyncrasies (Ebow guitar and heavily-effected lap steel solos) that give it a wild card Neil Young-like charm.

Ehresman tells us: "I was in the middle of working on a long, complex psychedelia song at the time when I stopped for the night, and stuck in the Dylan documentary "No Direction Home" while I ate my dinner......But I had forgotten that every time I watch that DVD, I get so blown away by what Dylan was writing in his early 20s that I feel like I immediately have to write something new myself......I didn't want to start a new song at that moment, because I wanted to finish recording the one I was already working on.......But when the muse strikes, you don't want to waste it.......so I wrote the words and music, then went into the home studio to record the acoustic guitar and vocals so I wouldn't forget overnight how it went.......The next day I recorded the other parts, and had some talented friends come in to add contributions of their own."

"This is a song about what it's like to sit here in Central Mexico and watch the US crumble further every day on the news."

Now I Take My Leave
(© 2019 Walter Ehresman)

I must take my leave of Eva—
fallen some ways away from bottom lines and clean tomorrows.
It’s so hard these days to see her;
Anger boiling inside--digging holes away from good things she knows.

Stolen promises—centuries and more;
Hard eyes working ‘til they find you, taking all the things that make a home.

So now I take my leave of Eva;
One last look goodbye—a red mist rising from sea to shining sea.
All those years I worked to save her—
but it’s all that we can do, ‘til those working days are through.
