about

[A MESSAGE FROM WALTER]

ORIGINALLY APPEARED ON MY 1991 ALBUM "SPLIT-BRAIN THEORY."

My first several solo albums were recorded on a primitive Tascam Porta-One 4 track recorder that used regular cassette tapes in it. It was an unpleasant machine that never seemed to work as advertised, and I seemed to spent an inordinate amount of time fighting with the damn thing instead of spending that time trying to actually be creative.

And so there was a strong temptation, in this project of revisiting old songs, to re-do a couple from back then so that I could focus on the arrangements and performances instead of cursing that little machine. And "Only You Remain" is one of those songs. When I originally recorded it, I did all the synthesizer-type parts on a Yamaha G-10 guitar synthesizer, and used a Roland Dr. Pad electric percussion pad set for the percussion parts. That original version of the song was a weird pagan processional-sounding thing, with the vocals done using a vocoder-like machine hooked up to the guitar synth. For this new version, I just spontaneously tried recording it as a piano/vocal piece, and what you hear is the first and only take I did. This was recorded in the very early days of the COVID lockdown.

lyrics

Only You Remain
(© 1990 Walter Ehresman)

When you step into the night,
and all the feelings that you have are locked up tight--
who will keep you sane, when only you remain?

When you’re standing all alone,
in a crowded room or sitting in your home--
is it worth the price you pay, when only you remain?

[break]
Open up your heart;
‘Cause love is worth the scars.

When you fall into despair,
it’s nice to know that someone is there;
You can avoid the pain, when only you remain.
