The Last Spark of Kindness

from South of the Wall by Walter Ehresman

/

about

Written the week of Trump's election, the sadness and despair Ehresman felt about his fellow Americans--in some way a culmination of all the worst fears he had been writing songs about for decades--is utterly self-evident in this song. It may well establish "political dirge" as a new genre (although we will all hope there are precious few times where such songs NEED to be written......).

lyrics

The Last Spark of Kindness
(© 2016 Walter Ehresman)

When the last spark of kindness
fades from off the screen,
we all will walk into the darkness
and know the worst unseen;
And look back
(Oh, we’ll look back!)
Back to the time,
The time we could have changed it;
But we didn’t have the will to stem the tide.

When the very last better angel
sank under the mire;
no hearts left here to see it—
only egos of desire;
Wanting more;
Wanting all;
None to share;
In the bunkers of our greed;
‘cause we didn’t feel the need to try to care.
